The vocabulary

• Analytics. Totals rather than individuals: how often a page opened, which entry point brought the visit, roughly which region it came from. It steers what gets written next and what gets fixed, and it is only ever set with consent, or where local law allows without it.
• Attribution. When a tracked link takes you to an operator, a record allows that operator to credit the referral. It measures a click, not a person.

Services we do not control

Embedded services — analytics providers, and an operator's own systems once a link has been followed — may set cookies of their own under their own policies. Once you are on an operator's site, that operator's cookie policy governs, not this one.

Turning things off

• The banner. Where shown, it stores your decision and can be reopened to change it.
• Your browser. Blocking and deletion are available in every major browser, applied to one site or to all of them — bearing in mind that removing the necessary category leaves parts of this site broken.
• Device settings. Phones and tablets layer their own tracking and advertising restrictions over whatever the browser is doing.
